Red tailed phascogale

The Fascinating Phascogale

Island Brook Estate is home to the nearthreatened and vulnerable marsupial known as the phascogale. The red-tailed phascogale was once more prevalent through the Australian mainland, but is now thought to only survive in small areas throughout the southwest, including the jarrah forest within the estate. The red-tailed phascogale is ash-grey and cream coloured with blackish patch in front of the eye and reddish coloured ears. Its tail is the most distinctive feature. The base of the tail is covered in red-coloured fur which runs through to a long brush of dark hair at its end.

Wildlife

In addition to the rare phascogale, our grounds are abundant with natural flora, fauna and wildlife that inhabit our forest. It’s common to find kangaroos hopping through the open fields and our property geese frolicking in the gardens by the Residence and cellar door. You’ll also find a vast array of local birds and marsupials within the forest. As always we encourage guests to take caution when exploring our grounds and not to approach native wildlife.
